JAMES BLAIN BLUNK (1926–2002) forged a distinctive practice rooted in wood and ceramic, shaped by Japanese principles of directness and a deep reverence for natural materials, which he channeled into archetypal forms carved from raw, salvaged materials. After formative apprenticeships with masters in Japan, he built the acclaimed Blunk House, a home and studio constructed entirely from salvaged materials, filled with his own furniture and ceramics. Moving fluidly between ceramics, jewelry, painting, weaving, furniture, and sculpture, he is best known for monumental seating environments hewn from salvaged redwood root systems. His work has been widely exhibited internationally and is held in public collections worldwide. His estate is represented by Olney Gleason in New York and Kate MacGarry in London.
The BLUNK FOUNDATION is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based at the Blunk House in Inverness, California. Its mission is to preserve, restore, and activate the legacy of JB Blunk through the conservation of his home, studio, and archives, and by opening his world to the public, researchers, and artists.
BLUNK SPACE is a platform for contemporary and historical art and design influenced by JB Blunk’s practice in Point Reyes Station, California. The gallery shows contemporary designers and artists in dialogue with JB Blunk and his circle, enabling an ongoing exploration of creative legacy and influence.
BLUNK SHOP produces artisan-made reproductions of original objects made by JB Blunk alongside select unique works made by contemporary designers at the Blunk House, introducing the artist’s legacy into new homes for daily use, as he originally intended. The brick-and-mortar location is in Blunk Space gallery in Point Reyes Station, California.
